MacBook Pro First Impressions

Updated: May 13

This isn't just any other laptop, this is the MacBook Pro, it's probably the most important tool I use to help run my business, and I got it from Amazon. This machine is a beast. I constantly use Affinity suite for video & photo editing to market for my company. Everything runs so smoothly and I love it.

PRICE: FROM $2,599

CPU: 9TH GEN 8 - CORE INTEL CORE OR CORE I9 RAM: 16GB TO 64GB STORAGE: 512GB TO 8TB GPU: AMD RADEON PRO 5300M OR 5500M DISPLAY: 16 INCHES (3072 X 1920 PIXELS) BATTERY: 100-WH, UP TO 11 HOURS SIZE: 14.1 X 9.7 X 0.64 INCHES WEIGHT: 4.3 POUNDS

My overall opinion of the 16 in' Macbook Pro is that it's fantastic. Compared to its predecessors, both the screen and battery have been given an upgrade. There have been no revisions to the CPU, just less throttling and noise from the fan thanks to increased performance from an improved thermal system which can dispute an additional 12 watts of heat. There have been additional options added to the GPU, specifically an updated version to AMD’s 7nm Radeon Pro 5300m or 5500m, increasing performance while lowering power consumption. The keyboard has been given the changes that everybody has been asking for and the audio and mics are probably the best they've ever been in a Macbook.

KEYBOARD

The key travel has been extended to 1mm, which is half of the original keyboard found on the 2015 and prior models. The keys sort of spring back making it quiet and exceptionally comfortable to type on. They're slightly smaller but that doesn't make typing on them any more difficult. The directional arrows are now properly set up with the return of the escape key, making it a breeze to flip through open applications. The Esc key is back and on the right-hand side where you'll find the Touch ID and power button.

The 16-inch models come with the Touch Bar that's been placed slightly further from the top row of keys, to help avoid accidental input. Controversial at first, I think it may now be the medium between physical keys and the useful Touch Bar which adapts to the content on the screen. They've created a new design, with the top qualities of the old Macbook keyboards, the desktop Magic keyboard, and the recent MacBook’s butterfly switches.

DISPLAY

The difference in the size of the screen is subtle but noticeable. The new 16” display has a native resolution of 3072 × 1920 pixels, with a density of 226 pixels per inch. In contrast to recent releases, you won't notice a vast difference, but true to Apple, the display is absolutely gorgeous. The 0.6-inch difference in size retains the same logical resolution, so everything looks just slightly bigger.

The physicality isn't the best of it though, the visuals produced are superb. The traditional graphic setup is still there, the onboard Intel chipset, which operates when the demand for visual performance is low. You also have a discrete AMD chip which delivers significant improvement over the previous generation. In fact, the base model delivers performance in excess of the upper spec Vega chipset from last year's. The graphics card offers an incredible leap in performance. As before, the system will automatically choose which graphics card to use depending on demand. Visuals can perform at 35-40FPS with ease, same settings just huge improvements

PROCESSOR

The processor base model has the same chipset as the 2019 15.4" model. The performance, however, is about 10% better due to significantly improved airflow and larger heatsinks. The issue of heat-related throttling has been largely addressed. On the upper model, the machine now comes with 8 cores and serious performance bump. There is literally nothing you can throw at this MacBook that it won't handle with a breeze. You'll love the fact that now base starting size of the SSD has been doubled on both the entry model and the upper model with 512GB and 1TB respectively.

AUDIO

The sound quality is amazing. Bass is pronounced and crisp and treble is sharp. The sound is rich and room-filling. There are now six speakers included. There isn't any of that distortion that you usually get with a laptop. Apple added three microphones, giving better noise reduction and improved sound fidelity.

This laptop brings the best value its lineup to date. If you carefully look at the costs of truly compatible Windows offerings, you'll find the MacBook Pro to be competitively priced.

Features include the Ninth-generation 8-Core Intel Core i9 Processor,

a stunning 16-inch Retina Display with True Tone technology, Touch Bar and Touch ID

, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M Graphics with GDDR6 memory, Ultrafast SSD, Intel UHD Graphics 630 and a Six-speaker system with force-canceling woofers
